    "Maintaining the Web Under Less Than Obvious Circumstances" was the name of Rova's "system" for spontaneous composition in live performance. (As we further developed this in the 1990's and until the present day, we changed the name of the system to "Radar." For examples of that, listen to the CD "No Favorites, which releases from New World Records in October 2016. The system was slowly developed in rehearsals and through a lot of individual cogitation between rehearsals and between tours. It borrows from new music composer sources, from ideas each of us had while listening to both improvised music and new music composers, and frankly, though to lesser degrees, to all kinds of music. We asked the question: what's that? when sharing music that surprised us globally, or "how can I replicate that?" when listening to music that seems to have a sound specificity that can be either described or analyzed and reduced to a word or two that describes the sound or the process behind a set of sounds. While Rova has released pieces like this on many CDs, this is the one CD that consists of primarily structured spontaneous compositions.

"Grace" was originally conceived for a special 1993 performance at Grace Cathedral in San Francisco, a huge church space with a very long sound decay, perhaps 15 seconds. We recorded in a smaller church to partially retain the sound that the composition was designed for. But this is definitely a studio version of a longer piece involving, when played in concert, all four saxophonists circling the audience and creating "surround-sound" events as part of the piece.
